The bags & baskets

The bags & baskets

Made by hand

The process begins with harvesting sisal from the plant, which is then stripped, cleaned, and dried - colored by natural produced pigment. Skilled artisans meticulously weave the fibers, using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

The bags and baskets are made by local women, who play a central role in preserving the cultural heritage of their communities. Each bag is unique, and reflect the artisan's creativity and attention to detail. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these bags are also eco-friendly, as sisal is a natural, biodegradable material - and all colors are made by nature.

Tradition

The tradition of crafting sisal bags in Kenya is deeply tied to the country's cultural practices and community life. Passed down through generations, this art form has long been a way for women to express their creativity while preserving their heritage. The weaving techniques and designs are often learned from elders within the family or community, with patterns reflecting local symbols, history, and identity.

Traditionally, these bags were not only functional but also carried cultural significance, often used in daily life or special ceremonies. Over time, the craft has evolved, yet it remains a vital link to Kenya’s artisanal traditions and a means of preserving cultural continuity.
